Learn more about training a dog not to jump on people
Dog training is more of an art than a science. There is a level of skill that needs to be put in your dog obedience training that turn out to be the difference between success and failure.
Most folks think that obedience training consists of bribing and begging their puppy to act like a little gentleman or lady. This is a fallacy. The pooch often declines to execute the action called for and is likely to produce a personality that is dominant, boisterous, and unmanageable.
Some others think that a stricter approach, using correction, is the correct method for obedience puppy training. Done correctly, this method is usually extremely effective. If you mishandle it, you may create an unhappy dog, or a shy pet as a best case.
The perfect procedure for dog obedience training is a consistent practice of praise and correction. Trainers using this method will use praise and toys to introduce the dog to the dog obedience training process. This is the stage where the pooch learns the basic commands such as sit and stay, etc.
If the pooch decides it wants to do its own thing and doesn't perform the commands, they will be lessoned that they may have to be corrected, typically by a chain or choker collar. The correction technique should be used in more extreme cases and just when the pooch refuses to postively react to a command that the dog have already learned. this particular is important. Correcting an animal for a command that the puppy is not comfortable with only gives them a sense of total confusion.
It is a must that you establish that you are the leader of your pack. Once you have established yourself in this specific role, your puppy can be assured that he is being treated with kindness and fairness and by consistent rules set up by the leader. A caring trainer will keep that role as leader or risk loss of control of the puppys conduct.
Consistency and fairness are the most important factors to effective and efficient training. You should endeavor to be as consistent as you can be. Never ignore a disobedient conduct on one occasion and correct the dog for the same behavior at another occasion. This results in your puppys confusion. The most viable position is to affect a correction within a minute of the errant behavior, not an hour later. A key point to remember, a dog is taught by consistent repetition.
A very important function of the dog obedience training experience is to know the intensity of correction needed. If a simple NO is told to the dog and deals with the errant behavior, then further correction should not be required. But then again, a grievous violation like snarling at a individual may deservedly take a serious correction.
In summary, puppy training boils down to learning how and when to reprimand or correct your dog. your most important dog training goal is to achieve the respect of your pooch and produce a well bred, friendly pup.
